Pathfinder Personnel Manager Keeley McConnell looks ahead to a 2020 that is set to take off in the coming weeks…..

There’ll be plenty of action coming up later in the year as we look ahead to some big dates in the calendar at our various locations.

One of the big events in Southampton will be the May arrival of P&O’s impressive new cruise ship Iona, which will carry over 4,000 passengers and will rank as the biggest ship in the fleet. It will mean a considerable expansion of our Cruise and Passenger Services valet parking business on turnaround days with a requirement for a well trained and dedicated team to service this requirement.

Following the departure of ships on world cruises over the next few weeks, there will be a lull before we start gearing up for the forthcoming cruise season in the Spring . For those wanting to join our valet parking team, the key is to get your names in early as we start panning ahead.

It will be the same for our cruise ship handling teams as our sister company SCH looks ahead to the arrival of the massive Royal Caribbean Cruise Line Quantum Class cruise ship Anthem of the Seas, which will operate out of Southampton throughout the  2020 season.

There’s a similar story in Liverpool where another busy season will see around 100 cruise ship calls, combining turnaround and day calls.

While the cruise ship season will gear up from Spring onwards, our ro-ro business is a constant with an on-going requirement for drivers in both Southampton and Liverpool.

Once UK manufacturing gets back into full swing after the festive break, we expect to see growing volumes of exports through Southampton compared to last year, with a further need for cargo lashers. Early indications suggest imports could also grow through both Southampton and Liverpool.

Opportunities are set to increase through all the ports where we operate and, while the need for cargo workers is constant, we can expect to see demand for reliable people hit its peak as the 2020 cruise season takes off.

The key is to start your preparations now if you want to take full advantage of this trend. The cruise ship sector in the UK will have a quiet spell over the next few weeks but our message is to be prepared and start planning now if you want to join our teams from Spring onwards.
